A Humble and Hope-filled Place
OUR EARLY DAYS
The genesis of St. Peter’s Primary School is deeply rooted in the Christian faith of our local communities and in our strong sense of independence. As parents, we wanted to provide a quality education for our children that reflected our religious beliefs and values. After much discussion and debate, it was decided that our best option was to open our own independent or private school which would operate free of the normal restrictions and compromises that come from accepting government funding and resource support.
St. Peter’s Primary School started up in 2015. In the early days, all of the classes were held in a shared space in the nearby St. Mary’s Catholic Church. After selecting a suitable site to build new classrooms, all the parents and the local business community came together to organize a fundraising campaign in support of the new school. Many parents helped in the construction of the classrooms and contributed materials to the school. When St. Peter’s Primary School “officially” opened on the 8th of January 2017, there was a total enrolment of 45 children with 6 teaching staff. There was a Nursery section (with Baby, Middle and Top class) and a lower Primary section (Primary class 1, 2, 3).
TODAY
To say that our little school has been a success would be an understatement. Today, just six years after opening, the school boasts an enrolment of approximately 359 students, 11 teachers and 2 full time support staff. All classroom spaces are full and plans have been made to soon build additional classrooms to meet the needs of anticipated future growth.
Other area primary schools have not fared as well. Some have closed or have seen their enrolment numbers drop. St. Peter’s Primary School’s success comes down to three factors:
-
- A strong and respectful partnership between parents and teachers to ensure academic success for all,
- All students are encouraged (with a variety of incentives) to work hard and to excel, and
- With the support of local businesses, our school has worked hard to create an outreach program that not only shares our success stories with visitors but also helps to provide a modest source of funding for a variety of school projects and needs.

OUR CAMPUS: A Church building used as School office and Baby A & B and Middle classes held here. B Primary Class 1 is held here. C The Top Class makes use of this building. D This is the school’s sports ground. E Two classroom buildings (4 classrooms in building on left – completed February 2019 – and 2 classrooms in building on right – completed September 2017) used to hold Primary Classes 2-7. F This is the area in which a future classroom building is to be located.
FUTURE PLANS
Today our school is run by a five member Parent Council who oversee the day to day running of the school and who decide on and coordinate the spending on all of the school’s short and longer term projects such as:
-
- Building three new classrooms to address the current overcrowding in the church
- Pouring concrete floors and plastering walls in all of the 6 existing classrooms
If you have plans to someday come and see our famed Mountain Gorillas in the Bwindi National Park, we invite you to add us to your travel itinerary. Our classroom doors are always open and each year we greet dozen of international visitors. We look forward to meeting you soon.
